Costs and benefits of this growth are multiple, complex and often difficult to assess. They operate at different levels and are a touchstone for intense political, community and academic debate. This conference will examine impacts that gambling, in its various forms, has on individuals, communities and societies. This includes consideration of the nature and extent of these impacts and ways to modify them. The conference will also provide an opportunity for participants from throughout the world to discuss recent developments and innovations in gambling policy, practice and research. An important aspect is the extent to which research informs policy and practice and vice versa. Workshops (within and associated with the conference) will provide opportunities to enhance practitioner competencies. In recent years the Auckland University of Technology Gambling Research Centre and Problem Gambling Foundation have separately organised a number of well-attended international conferences. This year they have combined to host a premier event responsive to the broad constituency of individuals and organisations with an interest in gambling and problem gambling. The programme will include invited keynote presentations by leading authorities as well as submitted papers, posters, displays and workshops.
