New Plymouth District Council campaign

24 March 2010 Latest news

The period for consultation on the draft gambling venue policy is currently underway and will end on 9 April 2010.

In 2009, over $16.6 million was lost in New Plymouth through pokie machines outside casinos. The New Plymouth District currently has 29 venues and 388 machines.

You can help us keep the number of pokie machines down in New Plymouth.

The Council is currently seeking feedback on a number of policy options, including their existing/proposed policy which allows for up to nine gaming machines per new venue, or up to 18 machines if two licensed venues legally and physically merge.  The decision to retain the current policy was in spite of a recommendation by the Council's policy committee to endorse a Sinking Lid Policy.

The Problem Gambling Foundation of New Zealand and its allies support a Sinking Lid Policy (this means the number of pokie machines and venues in the New Plymouth District will be 'capped' and that cap will further reduce if a venues closes down).  It also means that venues are unable to relocate.

We want the council to adopt a Sinking Lid Policy. This will permanently reduce the number of pokie machines in the New Plymouth District and minimise the harm caused by problem gambling.
