Do we need more pokies?

The Dunedin Council proposes to retain its Gambling Venue Policy (almost no restrictions on the numbers of venues with pokies in Dunedin).

Dunedin has 605 gaming machines in 49 venues.

Option 2 is the campaign to convince Council to introduce a "sinking lid" which will mean no more pokies in Dunedin.

The Statement of Proposal included three options:

1. Preferred Council Option - Status quo is preferred by Council.  There will be no limiting of venue or gambling machine numbers but they cannot be established in residential areas or recreational areas unless it is for organised supporting purposes.
2. Alternative Option 1 - Limit, or cap the number of gaming machine venues and/or machines.  If this option was selected the Council would need to decide on the number of venues and gambling machines the district would allow.  Staff recommendation is that the cap be set at the current level (49 venues, 605 machines).
3. Alternative Option 2 - "Sinking Lid".  This option would see a prohibition on all new venues.  As the number or venues fall there would be no more approvals for new venues or increases in the number of machines within the city.

Suggestions regarding submissions

PICK OPTION 2 - Clearly state you prefer OPTION 2.  The more submissions that consistently say Option 2 the better -  it's a bit like voting.  If you want variations on that option then elaborate on variations.

STATE WHY YOU PREFER OPTION 2 - You can keep this quite simple.  It is best to focus on one or two main points that relate to you or to your group's work.  I.e many of our clients who need budgetary advice have gambling problems.  If you have data or references, that's great but you don't need it - your experience and your opinion count.

ASK TO SPEAK TO YOUR SUBMISSION - If you are able to, and are prepared to, it is good to speak to your submission.  Oral submissions often have a bigger impact.

SUBMIT AS INDIVIDUAL CITIZENS AS WELL AS ORGANISATIONS - All your members, clients, volunteers can make individual submissions as well as your group.

SUBMIT IN WRITING- Submissions close Friday 06 November 2009.  Address submissions to Chief Executive, PO Box 5045, Dunedin 9058, Attention Kevin Mechen. To view template click here

SPREAD THE WORD - The more submissions the better.  Spread the word - it will be the submissions that change the Council's decision.  Can you put it in your newsletter?  Do you have mailouts?

Submissions closed 06 November 2009.
