Mapu Maia

Mapu Maia - the new Pacific Unit at The Problem Gambling Foundation

Mapu Maia is The Problem Gambling Foundation's new Pacific Unit which has been established to provide a dedicated, culturally appropriate service for Pasifika.

Its focus is to work with Pacific communities educating and raising awareness about the harm that gambling can cause. It will also provide counselling and support for Pacific families in Auckland that need help with problem gambling.

Mapu Maia was officially launched at a special event held at the Problem Gambling Foundation's Auckland office, on Tuesday the 9th of February, 2010.
There was plenty of support from the community with representatives from Pasifika community groups, Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs, Child Youth and Family, Kaumatua, NZ Police, churches and other service providers and the Matua Council of the Waitemata District Health Board, who came to show their support for the new service.

The Samoan phrase, 'Mapu Maia' means a place to come in and rest or shelter - a place for hope.
