Gamble Free Day in Christchurch: Four main events/activities
- The consumer group FOG (focus on gambling) Problem Gambling Foundation, other service providers and members of the public will be marching to raise awareness about Problem Gambling in the community. We will have a display in the square featuring hard hitting facts about gambling.
George Wynyard from He Waka Tapu will sing his song about gambling, a
courageous client will read his poem about gambling and members of FOG will talk to the crowd.
Join us on our march at 11:45am at the corner of Peterborough and Durham St.
- PGF will have a half page spread in one of our main community papers for GFD a week before the day. This will feature a
colouring in competition for children under 13. The picture will be of a family activity and we are looking for sponsorship for some very cool family activities for prizes. We will advertise GFD, PGF services as well as featuring hard hitting facts about gambling in NZ on this spread as well.
- “Happy Hour”: We are writing to all the pokie venues in ChCh asking them to support GFD by turning off their pokie machines for an hour. We are hoping to get some on board with the enticement of publicity through our normal media activities. We are also writing to all the Trusts asking them to back this event.
- The Asian service in Christchurch also have a “Dining Discount Campaign” on 1st September with 16 Chinese and 13 Korean restaurant participating. Anyone with our “Dining Discount” voucher to enjoy their dinner at any of the 29 participate restaurants will get 10% discount. Poster competition involving a selection of classes from each school in Gisborne, their family/whanau and the respective school teachers and principals.
Presentations are made in school, topics are given to the children to take home and discuss and then the children put their ideas of what Gamble Free Day should look like into a poster.
All art work collected up and with huge community hype, laid out in the Army Hall where they are judged by the Mayor, artists and a student. Prize money (sponsored) of $500 for each winning painting and each school is awarded in front of significant media presence.
The winning posters are then sponsored into posters and wall hangings for the community.
This was piloted last year and was a huge success.
