Youth
On this page you will find:-
Our young people are the first generation to be exposed - from the time they are children - to a large range and availability of gambling opportunities. They are at risk because they are tempted by new technologies with which they are very familiar. Gambling is presented as a commodity and associated with wealth, social acceptance and excitement.
As a consequence, youth gambling has become a rising concern internationally.

When is it not a game?
For some time, we have been concerned about the lack of knowledge and information regarding the part gambling plays in the lives of young New Zealanders. PGF have produced a resource called When is it not a game? A Health Education Resource for Secondary Schools. The resource fits directly within the Health and Physical Education Curriculum and was developed in line with the Youth Development Strategy Aotearoa and another document produced by PGF, in conjunction with Centre for Gambling Studies, Supporting the Wellbeing of Young People in Relation to Gambling in New Zealand.
This resource can be used by teachers and youth leaders/educators to develop in students the ability to critically analyse and respond to the influences of gambling on individuals and the wider society. The resource material is written in an informative and accessible style. The learning focus is on harm minimisation, rather than on a "gambling is bad" approach. Raising awareness in our young people will allow them to make informed choices around gambling.
PGF are offering free training workshops throughout New Zealand for secondary school teachers, youth leaders/educators, and health professionals that work with young people, to introduce and experience the resource, and provide current information on youth gambling.

Youth Education Project (YEP) Report - 2004
Our young people are one of the greatest affected and at risk populations for gambling. Youth are now growing up in a generation where gambling is highly visible, accessible and normalised. Gambling is often overlooked as a major issue that can have tremendous impacts on the development and quality of life of our young people. Click here to download the report. (pdf file)

PGF's Youth Programme
Because the long-term effects of youth gambling are not well understood, there is the need for health education, legislation and enforcement to minimise the negative outcomes of gambling for young people.
At PGF we employ a strengths-based focus and incorporate principles of youth development to ensure that young people are encouraged to participate and learn about the impacts of gambling. To help us achieve this, we have developed a Youth Programme that runs alongside our health promotion approach.
This programme provides free face-to-face counselling and support services for youth, their families/whanau and concerned others. Services offered include individual, family/whanau and groups. Family/whanau support and involvement is strongly encouraged. Click here (pdf file) for more on our Youth Programme.
